Hello Brooklyn - Jay-Z & Lil Wayne

4.) "Hello Brooklyn" by Jay-Z & Lil Wayne
http://www.metrolyrics.com/hello-brooklyn-lyrics-jayz.html

This song is called Hello Brooklyn by Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. This song is really cool compared to the other three that i spoke about. This song talks about Jay-Z's love for his home town Brooklyn. Rather than talking about a real woman like the other songs do this song uses Brooklyn as a girl to the rapper. Jay talks about the places he used to hang, the people that used to live there and many other things that describe his relationship with the burrough. The rapper describes Brooklyn as his baby girl. The song is super fun and takes on a different perspective of relationships in comparison to the other songs I chose.

This song is very relevant to the topics that we discussed in class. The entire song is a metaphor within itself. Throughout the song and especially in the chorus Brooklyn is being associated as Jay-Z's girlfriend. The chorus states, "Hello Brooklyn, how you doin'? Where you goin'? Can I come to? And if I can, I'm a be your man You could be my lady and have my baby." This is the first time I have seen someone compare a place to a woman but it makes the song really fun and interesting compared to mundane songs that are redundant about relationships with women. I really like this song and the idea that it shows.

Lost Ones - J.Cole

3.) "Lost Ones" by J.Cole

This song is called Lost Ones by J.Cole. This song was part of J.Coles major album, Cole World. This song is a paragon for my theme. It fits perfectly since the entire song is about his relationship with his girlfriend who is now pregnant. They keep going back and forth discussing the current situation. As the lyrics progress he begins to talk about the reasons why he cant be a father and help nourish this child he has created. During the chorus and throughout the lyrics he says that "if this world was perfect then maybe we could make it work but i doubt it." The song involves a lot of passion and also portrays events that really take place in our every day lives.

The song relates to topics we spoke about in class since it involves dialogue and narrative. This song is really interesting because the first verse that J.Cole raps is his side of the story and how he explains that although he cries about the situation sometimes, he thinks that an abortion is the best route since he does not think either of them qualify to be parents yet. It gets interesting because after this verse and the chorus the second verse comes in and it is J.Cole again but talking as the girl. She begins to censure him for his comments and wanting to abort the child, she says the line, "Did you forget all those conversations that we had way back
Bout your father and you told me that you hate that nigga
Talkin’ bout he a coward and you so glad that you aint that nigga
Cause he left your mamma when she had you and he ain't shit
And here you go doin’ the same shit." This shows that she thinks he is just like the man he said he never wanted to be. The song involves a lot of emotion and has an intense dialogue.

Marvins Room- Drake

2.) "Marvins Room" by Drake
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/drake/marvinsroom.html

This song is called Marvins Room by Drake. This is one of Drakes biggest hits. The song is really powerful and a lot of people can relate to it. This song involves relationships because the lyrics convey drakes feelings about his past girlfriend and how he feels about her new boyfriend. In the chorus he repeatedly says "Im just saying you can do better, tell me have you heard that lately." Clearly Drake is missing this girl. We can see in the lyrics that this ended relationship between Drake and this girl is making him feel awful and do things that are only hurting him. He keeps going back to getting drunk because he is so upset that she cant "kick it" any more. He continually talks about how he keeps drinking more and more as if he was drowning himself in his sorrow. The song is really interesting and besides the point that drake it making it also includes a great beat and flow.

This song also brings up a topic discussed in class through the elements of style. During this song we can clearly see the Drake is depressed and is turning to liquor as a way to escape the fact that this girl is now with another guy. He talks about calling this girl and begins expressing his sins and mistakes just saying that he needed someone to take the weight off. We can see that progressively he begins to become more upset and desperate to speak to this girl. The song portrays a lot of feeling and passion.

Bonita Applebum - A Tribe Called Quest

1) "Bonita Applebum" by A Tribe Called Quest

This song is called Bonita Applebum by A Tribe Called Quest. This song is one of their more popular songs and many people are familiar with the beat. The song goes hand in hand with my overall theme of relationships because throughout the song they are rapping about this girl Bonita Applebum. The chorus goes as stated, "Bonita applebum you gotta put me on". I think this must mean that hes into Bonita and she has to give him a chance. Throughout the song they speak about how the two are a match made in heaven, and being with her is his top priority. Clearly Q-tip (one of the rappers in this group) is showing his affection for this girl and hoping to get some in return.

During this song we see a narrative taking place which is one of the topics that we had discussed in class. Q-tips verse in this song is a dialogue he is having talking about Bonita and the reasons they must be together. It sounds like he is telling you a story about Bonita. He raps "Hey your like a hip hop song you know? Bonita Applebum you gotta put me on." He is talking to this girl throughout the verse while telling the listener at the same time how he feels.
